OpenAI released ChatGPT on 30 November 2022. It reached 100 million monthly users within two months and 900 million weekly active users by February 2026. It runs on OpenAI's GPT models and can search the web for up-to-date information.
What it can do

- Creating and editing images inside the chat
- Remembering things you ask it to (Memory)
- "ChatGPT agent" (July 2025) carries out multi-step tasks
- "ChatGPT Work" (July 2026) creates presentations, spreadsheets and documents from your connected apps and files
- A separate space for health questions (ChatGPT Health)
How to start

Things to know
- Can produce citations that look real but are wrong; open the sources
- Ads are being tested in the free version for adult US users
- ChatGPT Health is not available in the UK or the European Economic Area
