ChatGPT switches to GPT-6 and answers with charts and mini-tools, free users included
From 7 October paid users get GPT-6 Sol and, from 8 October, Free and Go users get Luna, with Intelligent UI building interactive answers; OpenAI says web-search answers start 44% sooner. Wired liked it; Search Engine Journal warns it could take traffic from calculator sites and leaves source display unclear.
What happened
On Wednesday 7 October, OpenAI announced “GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone”. Two things changed at once:
- A new model in chat. ChatGPT’s Chat tab started using GPT-6. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says both are tuned for everyday conversation. According to the help page cited by Search Engine Journal, GPT-6 replaces the “Latest” option in the model menu, while GPT-5.6 Sol stays available as a separate choice.
- A new shape for answers. The model was trained to decide for itself what form a reply should take: text, images, charts, buttons, forms or a small working tool. Simple questions still get plain text.
OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week. Until now the GPT-6 family was only available in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API; when Sol and Luna launched on 22 September, OpenAI said they were not yet in Chat.

What Intelligent UI does
Original demo recordings from OpenAI’s announcement, with the English interface preserved. Expand a demo and press play; seek or use fullscreen for a closer look. Controls inside the recordings are not interactive on this page.
Central limit theorem: watch averages settle39 sec
The recording starts with a skewed distribution of purchases, then explores sample averages. Watch how charts and experiment controls accompany the explanation.
GDP: change spending and see the result32 sec
An explanation of consumption and investment leads into an adjustable economy model, turning the relationships into inputs and results.
Monty Hall: why does switching help?17 sec
The demo places the doors, prize locations and switching outcomes together so readers can inspect each case.
Drone photography: explore a market visually40 sec
Images, market categories and charts help explain the US drone photography market. Watch how a longer answer organizes its information.

Other examples from OpenAI’s announcement, as described by several outlets:
- Taking apart a 7-speed bicycle: frame, wheels, drivetrain, brakes and cockpit; tap a system to see what it does.
- A tool on request: a calculator to see how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game you can play inside the conversation.
- Same question, old and new: OpenAI compared answers to “help me plan a Sunday lamb roast”.
| GPT-5.6 Instant (old) | GPT-6 Instant (new) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main body | Mostly prose | A photo of every dish |
| Quantities | A table for different party sizes at the end | A shopping calculator that rescales with the guest count |
| Steps | Written into paragraphs | A cooking timeline you can tick off |
| Shopping list | Copy and tidy it yourself | One-tap copy |

Wired’s Reece Rogers tried it before launch. Asked for a diagram of a slug, ChatGPT produced an anatomy graphic with a button for each part. He built a San Francisco apartment-affordability calculator with sliders for income and expenses that showed what share of take-home pay each unit would cost. His favourite was an aeroplane seat explorer comparing the cabins of four Alaska and Delta aircraft: tap any seat for details, with exit rows highlighted in green.
How it works: OpenAI says it built a library of ready-made interface components that can stream, plus a compiler that draws the interface progressively while the model is still writing, rather than waiting for the whole answer. During training, generated interfaces were graded for clarity, usefulness and completeness. OpenAI admits the model’s design judgement still needs work.
It is faster, too: GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking and add to the answer in stages. OpenAI says that for questions needing a web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. On a set of everyday agent tasks, GPT-6 at “Extra High” reasoning starts answering as quickly as GPT-5.6 at “Medium”, and still scores better than GPT-5.6 at “Extra High”.
How new is it? Not the first, but the first by default
ChatGPT had similar features before, but you had to ask for them. According to the release notes cited by Search Engine Journal, ChatGPT added interactive modules for more than 70 maths and science topics in March and interactive charts in June. OpenAI’s documentation shows that GPT-5.6’s launch also brought a “Visualizations” preview that you had to trigger by typing @Visualize.
What changes now is that the model decides when an interface helps, and it is on by default, including for free users. Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, told Wired: “We have a design team that spent a lot of time figuring out when adding a diagram, chart, or buttons adds value versus when it’s starting to feel cluttered.”
Rivals are doing the same. Both Wired and Search Engine Journal note that Google added “generative UI” to Search and its AI Overviews this year; one example uses several sliders to explain how black holes work.
What others say
- Wired: positive. Rogers wrote that the visual elements “felt like a welcome change” and signed off with “good riddance to walls of text”. He also noted that as interfaces are increasingly generated, designers may face an “identity crisis”, with AI deciding more of what software looks like.
- Search Engine Journal: a worry for websites. Senior news writer Matt G. Southern pointed out that two of OpenAI’s examples, the savings calculator and the bill splitter, use generic inputs and public maths, so they are the easiest to replicate. Calculator and converter pages could lose visitors when people can build the tool in the chat. He added that the announcement does not say how sources will appear when answers become charts, comparisons or tools.
- SoyaCincau (Malaysia): called it “a user interface redesign rather than a leap in core AI capability”. Free users get a useful upgrade at no cost, but paying for Plus just for the visual components is “hard to justify”.
Things to keep in mind
- Looking right is not the same as being right. Charts and calculators are generated on the spot, so the data and formulas can still be wrong. OpenAI’s documentation on visualizations also notes that a generated visualization is a snapshot of the information at the time, not a live dashboard.
- The figures are OpenAI’s. The 44% and other speed numbers come from internal tests; for its claim that GPT-6 addresses the key part of a question more often, OpenAI gave no figure.
- Not everywhere yet. The “Pro” thinking level on Pro plans still runs GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI, and neither do the older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows. The rollout is gradual, so not seeing it yet does not mean anything is wrong with your account. Enterprise access depends on administrators.
- Work and Codex are unchanged. This release only affects chat; in Work and Codex the recommended model is still GPT-6.1 Sol.
How to use it
| Plan | Monthly price (US) | Default chat model | Intelligent UI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-6 Luna | Rolling out from 8 Oct |
| Go | $8 | GPT-6 Luna | Rolling out from 8 Oct |
| Plus | $20 | GPT-6 Sol | From 7 Oct |
| Pro | $100 / $200 / $500 | GPT-6 Sol (“Pro” thinking uses Astra) | Yes, except the “Pro” thinking level |
| Business | $20 per user (billed annually) or $25 (monthly) | GPT-6 Sol | Yes |
| Enterprise | By contract | GPT-6 Sol | Depends on admin settings |

- Where: chatgpt.com on the web and the latest mobile apps, at thinking levels from “Instant” to “Extra High”.
- How to ask: no new commands needed; ask as usual. If you want a tool, say so: “make a shopping list that scales with the number of guests”, “build a savings calculator where I can drag the interest rate”.
- If you don’t want it: turn off “Layout and visuals” in settings on the web, or just ask ChatGPT for fewer visuals. OpenAI says some visual elements may still appear.
- Check it: ask it to show the numbers and formulas behind a chart, and for anything involving money or health, test it on an example whose answer you already know.
Separately, Trending Topics, citing 9to5Google, reports that at almost the same moment Google limited the free version of Gemini to its smallest model, Flash-Lite; the outlet argues the two companies are heading in opposite directions with free users.
