Model Context Protocol released
Anthropic releases MCP, an open standard for connecting AI applications to data sources and tools.
A historical account of this event. Usage notes are YLEM editorial analysis; check the provider for current features and prices.
What changed
MCP standardizes how an AI application connects to tools and data sources. The announcement included a specification, SDKs and Claude Desktop support. A compatible client and server are both needed.
What this means in practice
Think of a connector as a route to a specific system, not a new model. For a repository question, connecting the repository can provide context that was missing from the conversation.
How to read the result
Check which data and actions the connection exposes. Reading a file and changing it are different permissions; a standard interface does not establish the trustworthiness of every server.
