Make an image and revise it precisely
Define purpose, subject and aspect ratio. Review composition first, then change one thing at a time while stating what must stay.
- You'll get
- An image composed for its intended use, plus a clear revision brief.
- You need
- Purpose, aspect ratio and subject; for edits, an original image you have permission to use.
- Cost
- Try the tools and free plans you already have first; limits, features and availability vary — check the provider.

Which tool
Suggestions by task, not a tested ranking. If a tool you already have can do the job, keep using it.
| Tool | When to use it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Describe an image in conversation and continue with edits. | Availability and limits depend on your account. Compare precise edits with the original. |
| Adobe Firefly | Choose an aspect ratio in an image-generation interface and describe or edit a scene. | Features and limits vary by selected model. |
Start with the intended use
“Make a beautiful image” can produce a complete scene that does not fit its destination. An event poster needs room for a title; a website banner needs a wide composition; an avatar must remain recognisable at a small size.
For this exercise, make a reading-event background: a 4:5 portrait, an open book on a table near the bottom, empty space above and no text. Establish the composition first and add the title, date and sign-up information separately. Updating a date then does not require regenerating the whole image.
The illustration above shows the composition goal; its background control is not a live AI generator. In an image tool, enter the brief and check the aspect ratio. Firefly provides ratio options. Model choices and interface positions can change, so inspect the current generation or editing controls and usage limits.
Review the large relationships first
- Check that the aspect ratio fits the destination and the subject is not cropped.
- Look at where the title will go and whether there is enough empty space.
- Inspect lighting, perspective and subject relationships, then smaller defects such as edges or text.
- Download and inspect at the actual display size, not just as a thumbnail.
If the composition works but the background colour does not, use the chosen image as the edit input. Ask to change only the background to pale blue while keeping the book, table, position, angle and empty space. Compare both versions afterward. “Keep everything else unchanged” is a request, not a guarantee that the tool will preserve every detail.
Change one problem at a time
Edit this image: change only the background to pale blue. Keep the book shape, table, position, perspective, lighting and empty space above. Do not add objects or text, and do not crop. If exact preservation is not possible, explain and provide the closest version.
Some edits are more reliable in an ordinary editor. Replacing a word, updating a date or moving a heading is usually easier with an editable text layer than repeated image generation. Save the selected version, original and final brief so the next image can reuse the same reference. Check permissions and provider terms before using other people’s photos, trademarks or assets commercially.
Try it yourself
An example is filled in. Change the goal, input, output and constraints to your own; the prompt updates as you type. Copy it into your AI app. Nothing leaves this page.
Goal: Make a portrait background for a reading event Input: A book on a table with empty space above and no text Output: 4:5 portrait, minimal warm palette; add typography separately Constraints: Keep composition and subject when editing only the requested area Ask if information is missing; do not invent it. Explain what I need to verify.
